the short answer
AEO — answer engine optimisation — is the practice of structuring content so AI assistants and search summaries quote you as the answer. SEO aims to win a click; AEO aims to win the citation. The tactics overlap heavily, but AEO puts far more weight on direct answers, clear structure and machine-readable schema.
How is AEO different from SEO?
Classic SEO optimises for a ranked list of links: you want position one, and you want the click. AEO optimises for a generated answer, where the assistant reads several sources and synthesises a reply — sometimes citing you, often without sending a click at all.
That changes what good content looks like. Long preambles hurt you. A page that answers the question in the first forty words, then supports it with detail, is far more quotable than one that builds slowly to a conclusion.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. The underlying signals are largely shared: crawlable pages, sensible structure, genuine expertise, decent performance. A page that cannot be crawled or understood will not be cited either.
Think of AEO as an additional layer on top of solid SEO, not a replacement for it. If you are not doing the basics — titles, headings, internal links, page speed — start there.
How do you actually optimise for answer engines?
Lead with the answer. Put a direct, self-contained response near the top of the page, phrased so it makes sense when lifted out of context. Then structure everything else so a machine can parse it: question-shaped headings, short paragraphs, real lists.
Add schema. FAQPage, Article and LocalBusiness markup tell the machine what your content is rather than making it guess. And be specific — vague, hedge-everything copy is almost never quoted, because it does not answer anything.
- Answer the question in the first 40–60 words
- Use questions as H2s, mirroring how people actually ask
- Add FAQPage and Article schema
- Cite concrete numbers, dates and named sources
- Keep one clear topic per page
How do you measure AEO?
Imperfectly, and that is worth accepting up front. Traditional rank tracking does not capture whether an assistant quoted you. Watch branded search volume, direct traffic, referrals from AI surfaces where they appear in analytics, and simply ask new enquiries how they found you.
A practical habit: periodically ask the major assistants the questions your customers ask, and see who gets cited. If it is always the same three competitors, that is your gap.
common questions
What does AEO stand for?
+
Answer Engine Optimisation — optimising content so AI assistants and search summaries use it as the source of their answer.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
+
No. AEO builds on SEO. The same crawlability, structure and expertise signals matter, with extra weight on direct answers and structured data.
How do I get my business cited by AI assistants?
+
Answer questions directly and early, use question-shaped headings, add FAQPage and Article schema, publish specific and verifiable detail, and keep each page focused on one topic.
Does schema markup help with AI search?
+
Yes. Schema removes ambiguity about what your content is, which makes it easier for an answer engine to use it confidently.
